English

Queen Mary’s Department of English spans cultures and periods, from the early modern to the contemporary. Discover more at one of our Open Days.

Grounded in London’s East End, our research and teaching emphasises global perspectives and the relationship between literature and the wider world.

We are a highly critically-engaged English department – like the students we teach – and our areas of specialism include postcolonial and world literature, gender studies, queer theory and new media, ranging across platforms from the manuscript to the book, and from the stage to the digital.

After joining Queen Mary I very quickly realised this was 100% my academic home. The lecturers and seminars are unbeatable and staff are really great at making you feel comfortable in exploring your ideas around texts.
