Strategic partnerships

Strategic partnerships help you to make a difference in high-priority real-world problems which require complex, interdisciplinary research, innovation and collaboration. We work with global and local organisations to develop research, create centres of study and excellence and build long-term partnerships across portfolios of projects.

  • Support research, teaching and new opportunities for students to learn while achieving your development aims
  • Gain potential UKRI funding to generate research programmes which address global social and economic challenges
  • Support research in high priority areas and develop a centre of excellence for research and development (for example developing doctoral training)

Degree apprenticeships

Degree apprenticeships help you to attract top talent to your business by providing them with a fee-free degree.

Queen Mary is situated conveniently between the financial heart of the City of London, the Fintech hub of Canary Wharf and the insurgent start-ups of Tech City in Shoreditch.

This makes us uniquely positioned to deliver Degree Apprenticeship programmes to industry with the utmost convenience, minimum disruption and to the highest academic and professional standards.

Degree Apprentices split their time between university and your workplace, working while they learn. You can offset your training spend (eg tuition fees) against the Apprenticeship Levy.

  • We can help you build your workforce capability in targeted areas, such as management, data analytics and software engineering
  • We were the first Russell Group University to deliver Degree Apprenticeships and we remain at the forefront of this type of delivery
  • We offer exceptional facilities – we spent £105m on new facilities in the past five years

London City Institute of Technology

The London City Institute of Technology is a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London, Newham College and a wide range of employers. Opening in September 2022, it will specialise in delivering higher technical education and apprenticeships with a focus on STEM subjects, such as engineering, digital and construction.

Learn more about the London City Institute of Technology and how you can get involved as an employer by visiting the website.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)

A KTP is a three-way collaboration between a business, a university and an exceptional graduate (KTP Associate). If your business has identified a strategic need, develop it with academic expertise beyond what you have in-house.

  • A postgraduate Associate is employed to work on the project under the supervision of an academic with experience in the relevant field. The Associate is 80% based at the company where they embed academic knowledge to facilitate long-term company growth
  • KTPs are jointly funded by the Company (SME’s contribute 33% of total project costs / large companies contribute 50%), with the remainder funded by Innovate UK
  • The Partnership lasts between 12 and 36 months, depending on the project and the needs of the business
  • Queen Mary is ranked fourth in the UK for commercialising research (Entrepreneurial Impact Rankings 2019). We have proven success in KTPs with twelve live projects, and are the winners of the Future Innovator Award at KTP Best of the Best Awards 2020.
Find out more about how the programme works and the KTPs at Queen Mary on our webpage.
